Skyhook Military - I decorated my children's room with pictures of their favorite books. This is a guide if you want to do something similar.
I started with a set of picture frames. This way you know the number of images you need and the dimensions you are working with. I chose a set of 9 frames from Home Depot: 13" square with 8x8" mat. I also like IKEA's 9x9" 5x5" rug and HOVSTA square frames.

And I needed pictures. I picked about ten of my daughters' favorite books (they are 5, 2, 2). Normally I would use the scanner for the work copier, but my office has been closed for several months. Instead of buying a scanner, I decided to try taking pictures using my phone. I was surprised how well it worked. To get a clear picture, place the book on a desk or table with good lighting, keep the pages as flat as possible, and try to avoid reflections and shadows.

Once the images were on my computer, I used Figma to make some quick, small, square cuts to play out the layout. Figma is a pixel-based tool, so I scaled everything by assuming 20px per inch.
This allows me to plan ahead of time how it will look and make sure the images and colors match. Some books have beautiful pictures, such as a sick day for Amos McGee. I also tried to adjust the images to reduce collisions and give some direction: the witch flies on the right, Max swims left on the lower right, the animals climb on the lower left, etc.
My original plan was to do all the photos with a white background, which I think looks great - especially with the smaller frames - but I liked the colors of the photos and decided to leave them as is.
After selecting my 9 images, I went back to the original files to clean them up a bit. You can probably skip this step and do everything with the built-in tools from Shutterfly and friends. I have a lot of perfectionist tendencies, so I spent hours on the photos.

I used Pixelmator Pro to do some light retouching using the correction tool, curves and sharpening. Here are the steps I used in each image:
I started with Pixelmator's "ML Enhance" auto-correction feature. Sometimes it looked great and I saved the results; Other times it looked weird (perhaps the color balance of illustrations in children's books is different from what you normally see).
If I wasn't happy with ML Enhance, I adjusted the curves directly. If the image looked washed out, I used the curve tool to make the face white and used a soft S-curve adjustment to increase the contrast.
Pixelmator's correction tool is great and made it easy for me to fix wrinkles, light spots in a photo, and page edges where I needed a little extra color. I tried this video editing tool. In short, create a new blank layer, select the Repair Tool, make sure "Sample All Layers" is selected, and click and drag to fix the problems.

Once I had all the high quality JPEGs, I made some test prints from Mpix and Shutterfly. I was particularly drawn to the giclee prints and matte finishes. All the prints looked amazing; It was hard to believe that the source photo was a picture of a book I had taken on my phone.
The deep matte finish of the Mpix is great. This makes the print look like a page in a book rather than a glossy photo print. However, once I put it behind a glass frame, I could barely tell the difference, so I went for the cheaper glossy finish ($4.81 vs. $3.73 for deep matte at the time of writing for 8-inch by 8-inch prints). In retrospect, giclee prints were overkill given the relatively low quality of the original images.
I measured and marked the spots on the wall to hang the frames. Our house has a mix of drywall, paint, and plaster walls, and I underestimated how difficult it would be to hang things accurately. If I had it to do over again, I'd probably try to create a guide on a large sheet and use command strips instead of nails for hanging.
Overall, I was very pleased with the results and the girls loved the pictures when they saw the room.

Programmers love to write code, but few want to review it. While code review is mandatory at many companies, enjoying it is not. Here are some tips I've put together to get people to review your code. The basic idea behind these recommendations is that the person requesting the review should spend extra time and effort to facilitate the review of the refund request. In general, you can do this by discussing code changes in advance, keeping them small and clearly describing them.
At this point you may be wondering who died and made me king of code reviews (spoiler: no one). This tip is based on my experience reviewing code for other engineers on Twitter. I've reviewed thousands of pull requests, posted hundreds of my own, and observed what works and what doesn't on multiple teams. Some tips can be used to attract requests for open source projects, but I don't have much experience, so no guarantees.
I often use Phabricator and ReviewBoard, but I use the term "pull request" because I think it's a good catch-all term for code submitted for review.
If you talk to the people who own the code before you make a change, they might be able to review it. This only makes sense from a social perspective: they're invested in your changes, and code review is the last step in the process. You'll save time reviewing because these people have context for what you're trying to do. You can even save time before reviewing because you can look at different designs before committing to one.

The problem with skipping this step is that it's important to separate the design of the change from the implementation. After submitting your code for review, you'll feel strongly about the design you've just implemented. "Starting over" is hard to hear and hard to say for reviewers.
Last year at this time, I spent a lot of time wandering around thinking about all the things I wanted to teach my daughter: how to use the toilet, how to hold the four-way, how to bake cookies. A year later the only thing I taught my daughter about the toilet was please stop playing with it now honey it's not a toy. Babies should not eat cookies. Fortunately, the trip was limited to a crash-prone push-toy. On the other hand, I can say "Bedtime" and wherever you are, my Love will find you in my mind. Speaking of advice, I try not to give too much to new parents. They have a bunch of books, family, friends, and the occasional stranger telling them what to do and what not to do. I don't want to be another voice in this cacophony. The first few months of a new baby are difficult and you need to do whatever it takes to get through them. Sure, there may be universals when it comes to babies, but as someone who's only done it once, I'm not a candidate to know what they are. I'm happy to tell you what I think, but only if you want to know. Let's hope the rest of this article is what you want to know.

Yesterday afternoon I went out with some friends for a beer at Jupiter, a restaurant in downtown Berkeley. As I drank, I saw beautiful colors at the bottom of my glass.
I looked and realized that the color was a reflection of the sign on the side of the building, advertising the very hefeweizen I was drinking.
Pilots tell us that the most dangerous part of flying is takeoff and landing. That's true, but it's more dangerous for people who aren't into airplanes.
